The second workshop of the series to support the web-based technology capacities of indigenous tourism operators in the Pacific region will take place in Samoa on the 3rd through the 5th of November 2008 in Samoa. The workshop will be held with consideration of the distinct challenges of island destinations.

Islands are endowed with a wealth of resources, both environmental and cultural. The unique natural setting and diversity of indigenous cultures and lifestyles presents both opportunities and challenges to sustainable economic activities. Indigenous communities in the Pacific have increasingly turned to tourism as a sustainable avenue to safeguard and conserve both their fragile environments and their culture.

Hosting a workshop in the Pacific region will provide valuable support to the indigenous tourism operators in this unique environment. The workshop will be co-hosted by the Secretariat for the Convention of Biological Diversity (SCBD), the Secretariat for the Pacific Region Environment Programme (SPREP) and the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute (NZTRI).

SPREP, headquartered in Apia, the capital city of Samoa, will act as host and intermediary for the workshop, aiding with the venue, contacts and local funding. NZTRI will assist in providing experts, facilitators, web technology and will aid in raising additional funding. SPREP and NZTRI will co-facilitate the meeting along with the Secretariat of the CBD and provide its main substantive research and learning component. Other specialists and resource persons can be invited as needed. Hosting a workshop in the Pacific region will provide valuable support to the indigenous tourism operators in this unique environment.
